Location
The Olesno Poviat is located in the northeast part of the Opole region, at an intersection of historical trade routes: Amber Route from the Baltic Sea via Moravia to the south of Europe and the Salt Route from Cracow via Wrocław to the west of Europe.
The whole area of the poviat is a plane of slightly folded lowlands on the height of 200-300m above the sea level. The hoghest hill is located in the area of Kościeliska (280,2 m above the sea level) and is called The Biskupickie Hill.
Both the topographic profile and geographical structure result from glacier’s activity, presence of which is proved by numerous erratic bouders, preserved to this day (Wichrów, Biskupice, Łomnica and Knieja).
There are three rivers running through the poviat: the Stobrawa River, the Prosna River and the Liswarta River.
The poviat consists of the following gminas:
1. both urban and rural area: Olesno, Dobrodzień, Gorzów Śląski, Praszka
2. rural area: Radłów, Rudniki, and Zębowice
The capital city of the poviat is Olesno – first mentioned about in 1226.
The natural resources that can be found on the area are: ceramic clay, gravel and sand.
